Laser Hair Removal

Both men and women can find excess facial or body hair a nagging concern. Many find depilatories, shaving, plucking, waxing, and electrolysis uncomfortable, time-consuming and yielding only temporary results. Laser therapy on the other hand is gentle, safe, long lasting and non-invasive. Here at Amae Laser Skin Solutions, we offer both Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal.  Having the option of using Laser or IPL, our physicians are able to treat all skin colors (Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, African America, Middle Eastern, etc) safely and efficiently.

Why use a laser to remove hair?

Lasers can selectively target a pigmented hair while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. Compared with electrolysis, laser hair removal is more precise, much faster and you get a permanent reduction in hair growth and thickness.

How does the Laser Hair Treatment work?

Hair grows in three distinct cycles. The active growth stage (Anagen), followed by the dormant stage (Catagen), and the shedding or falling out stage (Telogen). Laser Hair Removal is only effective on hairs in the active growth stage (Anagen).

The laser is pulsed for only a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse, and the system's unique patented contact cooling hand-piece helps protect the skin. The pigment in the hair absorbs the laser light and converts the light to heat. The heat, in turn, damages the follicle eliminating or significantly impeding the hair's growth and destroys its ability to re-grow. It is important to treat each follicle during the growth cycle (Anagen) for maximum hair reduction.

What is permanent hair reduction?

Permanent hair reduction means that after the recommended number of sessions, your hair growth will be permanently reduced and the hair follicles will become permanently thinner. The government currently does not allow any laser machines to make claims that their laser can provide permanent hair removal. So beware of clinics who claim they can give you permanent hair removal.

What makes your lasers different from others?

Here at Amae Laser Skin Solutions, we offer both laser and IPL technology for hair reduction. The laser we use is safe for all skin types and penetrates deeps into the pigmented hair bulb whereas most other devices cannot penetrate to the hair bulb. Also, because of specific wavelength of the laser, the epidermal melanin is bypassed, offering the skin more protection.

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is also an excellent device than can be used for hair reduction also. The benefit of this device is that larger treatment areas can be treated faster. Individuals with darker skin types sometimes cannot use IPL for hair reduction because their skin has a higher tendency to turn darker or burn with IPL and that is why laser hair reduction is offered to these individuals.

How many sessions are needed?

The average number of sessions is 4-6 sessions every 4 weeks. The reason 4-6 sessions are necessary on a monthly basis is because the hair can only be reduced by the laser during certain growth cycles. Patients however will see a significant reduction just after 1 session.

What are the risks?

Anytime you have any kind of laser treatment performed there are 3 main risks.

  • Burn
  • Hyper-pigmentation (skin turning darker)
  • Hypo-pigmentation (skin turning lighter)

Here at Amae Laser Skin Solutions, we have taken steps to prevent and reduce these complications. If by some small chance complications do arise, our physicians are trained to deal with these complications

Will Laser Hair Removal work for me?

A consultation is required to determine if you are a suitable candidate for laser hair removal. Dark, coarse hairs on any part of the body respond well. As a rule, very lightly colored hair (white, gray or red) does not respond to treatment.

What do I need to do to prepare for the treatment?

In order to get the most effective treatment possible it is important to avoid excessive sun exposure, real or artificial 1 month before treatment date. We ask our clients to use a 30-45 SPF and to cover the area being treated from exposure. Self-tanners must also be avoided during treatments.
